No name change will ever change that fact. The opening of Jacobs Field in 1994 marked the dawn of a new era for professional baseball in Cleveland; one year later our beloved Tribe reached the World Series for the first time since 1954. And the new ballpark sitting at Ninth and Ontario served as a powerful icon for the revitalized city. No more “mistake on the lake.”
Today we are all witnesses to a new mistake: the renaming of Jacobs Field. Don’t let it happen without expressing your disapproval of the name change. Get a STILL THE JAKE t-shirt and wear it in protest of the decision. Join the fan advocacy movement to continue calling our home stadium “the Jake” regardless of what ugly, blue signage now serves as a phony façade for Jacobs Field.
As STILL THE JAKE supporters, we have nothing against the Cleveland Indians or Progressive insurance. The two organizations just struck the wrong kind of deal: Progressive should have paid for the “un-naming” rights to have Jacobs Field remain Jacobs Field. Imagine Tom Hamilton beginning each broadcast by thanking Progressive for its generous contribution to ensure Jacobs Field remained the same in name, encouraging fans to insure their motor vehicles with the Cleveland-based firm!
